Does anyone have success using the Award Seat Availability Calendar on JAL website?

I have been searching one-way award first class tickets from Japan to North America. There is very limited availability on the calendar, but even if I select those tickets and proceed, when it goes to the booking page, the seats are only available as "Waitlist". It seems like this is an error with the system but I'm not sure if this is only happening to me. Are there other recommended ways to look for award availability using JAL miles for JAL international award flights? Thanks.
