1: It's likely that you are using the tool wrong. Are you searching for a nonstop flight, or a connecting flight? Expertflyer only shows accurate availability when searching for a nonstop flight.
2: I've never had one clear more than 30 hours before the flight, I always have waitlisted and only missed once. It's up to you if you're okay with flying in your booked seat or not.
