this is all about rewarding the top spending customers and ensuring that a current 1K isn’t bumped by somebody’s spouse.
As a 1K, I can tell you that I've only gotten 2 CPUs in the last 3 years but, I've also observed that most of the pax hiking back to Y during pre-boarding are GS/1Ks, so I don't believe anybody's spouse was stealing UGs from me. I've seen with my own eyes that F is filled mainly with cash customers these days. UA is very successfully monetizing F. On my recent flights to LAS from the East Coast, F has been sold-out, sometimes weeks in advance, and nobody was getting UG'd.
