I would say that United is banking on the vast majority of 1MM with status above Gold still flying UA and not leaving due to this change.
Not sure if this has been rasied upthread, but this new change actually provides an incremental incentive for 1MM fliers to direct travel to UA even after they reach their annual goal for status in an independent effort to make it to 2MM and thereby restore the previous value of companion status.
