I thoroughly agree that WhatsApp would appear to be the way to go for 2FA, and indeed I have been offered that option occasionally, but I wonder if there are security issues that prevent it becoming a universal option.
I had problems last I was in Australia, in the end I bought a Vodafone SIM and popped it in to my phone and that solved my connection issues. Vodafone ws kind of my saviour, but it was a nightmare to keep my roaming on the network as my provider preferred Telstra.

Sadly it will not solve your message from BA issue, as it would be the Vodafone number that is active, not your regular number.
