I agree - I think this benefit was overly abused. Originially it was intended for Spouse or significant other living in the same household. Likely the companion would be traveling with the elite member on the same PNR. But too many people abused it.
They should have required a marriage license or domestic partner affidavit from a county gov't.
If this were the case, couldn’t they have just enforced the rules and canceled the companionship of anyone violating or abusing the rules.
But as is often the case, the rule-breakers usually ruin it for the rest of those that have followed the rules. And I do not mean to call anyone out. This can be true in a lot of situations.
