It's still a form of (open ended) nesting intended to defeat min stay requirements. But yes, AA would be far less likely to notice than if you were just nesting as two roundtrip bookings at a time. Hidden city bookings can also be employed to same money, but generally only in the return direction and it's also something AA can easily detect if done frequently.
