Don't forget that BA has a limited supply of planes and airport slots at LHR. That means that although a route might be profitable, it might not be as profitable as other routes that are currently being contemplated.

SAN is a far inferior location from a revenue standpoint compared to the new locations opening up in India and China for example (BLR, SHA etc.) which should clearly have priority in the use of scarce resources like aircraft and landing slots.
