Well BA Italia where advertising €1500~ in J to SAN during their Dec/Jan sale if I remember rightly. Most flights will put you through PHX and onto America West.

My cousin lives with her husband in Hillcrest and it is my favourite Californian city. I have photos of the zoo here. Cheap cheap hotels on the hotel loop $80 for 3 bed hotel room and I do love the Cheesecake factory at Fashion Valley.

I also heard someone saying that BA will try it again, the base is already setup there. ^
