Free selection for plat companions were always an issue, I doubt it will change with this new offer.
As for a slow, over the years retrofit, that would raise the issue of availability and consequences of aircraft swaps. The introduction of PE on KL was bumpy enough, given the size of the 777/350 fleet, doing the same would create a world of frustration to countless Elite+ and paying pax.
Or maybe the seat legroom can be quickly tweaked during scheduled maintenance, in which case we are talking months, not years.
