OK - I hadn't clocked that: makes his post something less than relevant - the e-gates were introduced to assist those living in Qatar.

My experience at DOH is that it works the same as UAE. I've entered Qatar three times in the last 9 months (EU passport) and the first visit I had to queue to the normal immigration for fingerprints and what not. The next two visit I have been through the e-gates in a minute or so.
