When I called they basically said it can only be used with retail stores, not online (great).
IF you really want to punish yourself, you can load to Apple Wallet, go to a grocery store, buy a DIFFERENT VGC (make sure that the $5.95 fee or whatever) is not over the limit of the card in your Apple Wallet..THEN use that newly purchased card to load to Discover Checking, etc.

Did you try to load your Amazon account or did you try to purchase something? Amazon must process loads differently than purchases because VGC always fail on loads but work on purchases. VGC also fail on subscriptions with Amazon. I haven't had an issue using a SYW VGC to make a regular one off purchase on Amazon.
FWIW I don't bother redeeming for VGC because 1) I have so many to deal with due to 2x GGR promos and 2) I'd rather not deal with hassles and just load either my Amazon or Apple account directly. The occasional 5% rebate just isn't that enticing.
