And also, can you clarify your last sentence. Mine is a business platinum card. AmEx did explain to me yesterday that when you book online it's different than when you book by phone, and sometimes the online bookings aren't visible to her and she has to call the online department. For your sentence, does "using AMEX Platinum" mean calling the number of your card, and does "amextravel.com" mean anyone with any card booking online?
Meaning if I have AMEX credit, I will have AMEX book me a new ticket and then cancel it on delta.com site -- thus creating a delta ecredit that can be used at delta.com. Alternatively, I skip all that and if I need to cancel a ticket I booked with AMEX, I just cancel it on delta's website.
I meant using AMEX Platinum travel (i.e. by calling the number on the back of the card). Big difference between speaking with a live agent on the phone vs. using AMEXtravel.com. Relevant for hotels and flights. If you book on amextravel.com you have basically booked with Expedia. If there is a problem, the AMEX platinum travel agents will not help you -- you will have to speak with an AMEXtravel.com agent which is a glorified Expedia agent. While the platinum agents aren't as good as they were 10 years ago, they are much better than the amextravel.com agents.
Even still, I will only book a flight with AMEX Platinum Travel if they have a meaningful discount....otherwise just not worth the trouble
