Personally, I have a 100% success rate on NH's Germany routes using miles or upgrade points, and in the height of summer too. Given how many flights NH has to Europe at this point, one of them's bound to have the upgrade space you need upon departure. Try seeing if a connection in VIE can work for you, too.
