Macau is tricky with hotels because you either have to choose Cotai, where most of the big casinos are, or the old town, given they're on separate landmasses separated by long bridges. Getting between them is hard because of taxi availability and the infancy of the metro. Personally, I like the old town more (it's hard even getting between some of the casino hotels in Cotai) but the Cotai accommodations can be better/newer/more interesting. So it depends what you really are looking to do more.
We've had a decent short trip staying at the Galaxy complex, which links together a bunch of the casino hotels (and is linked to the Broadway hotel outdoor eating area), and heading across the street to the small old town of Taipa, then just doing a day trip into the main old town.
