While trains are in no danger of disappearing in Europe and most developed Asian countries, I do have some concerns about Amtrak's long term viability. Under the Biden administration, t
he Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) of 2021 provided a much needed $66 billion to Amtrak and other passenger and freight rail projects. This funding is intended to improve the rail system, modernize the fleet, and improve station access. As with most of these things, the needed improvements seem to be stuck in the planning stages. Four years on, so far as I know plans to replace Amtrak's 30-40 year old long distance Superliner fleet remain stuck in the conceptual stage. Here's a link to an article detailing some of the issues...
Amtrak Long Distance Fleet Replacement Woes
Tomorrow will be here before you know it. Will Amtrak? In parts, yes. The Northeast Corridor (Boston - New York - Washington) is a moneymaker. Certain other intercity routes show long term promise as well (Chicago - MKE - MSP or Chicago to STL). My concern is the long distance routes such as those detailed in this report. For me, the best part of train travel is the immersion experienced on a 2-3 day rail trip. It is a unique and - for me at least - extremely enjoyable travel experience that simply cannot be replicated aboard an airplane. Maybe a cruise ship, but then the scenery comes up a bit short after awhile.
Anyway, I'd recommend going over to the Amtrak website and having a look around. Keep in mind that flexibility is your best friend when checking dates and prices, as the price of sleeper accommodations can vary by significant amounts from day to day. Here's wishing you a memorable ride!
