Originally, when I booked this ticket, LH.com showed me upgrade capabilities for FRA-ORD (as it should). I am very interested in preserving the option to upgrade this return TATL segment since this is on a 748 with a high percentage of J seats that usually go unsold.

Will this upgrade option reappear on LH.com once the UA segment is either confirmed or flown without the upgrade?
maybe, maybe not. The WL is likely the culprit for not seeing the return UG offer anymore. Have you tried cancelling the UA upgrade request and see, if that brings back the offer on the LH end? Maybe buy that UG first and then WL on UA?
