The PNR on lufthansa.com was showing two ORD-EWR segments - one confirmed, one waitlisted - and even LH call center could not accept payment for seat assignments.

Once UA removed me from the CPU list, the LH website started working (to the extent that it does) again: I can assign and pay for seats online, and there's even an upgrade offer ($260 for the BCN-FRA segment, $860 to PE and $1,550 to J on the TATL). Why did I have to spend 3+ hours dealing with this? Nobody knows.
