It is the airline who is making the monetary decision not the airport.
Allow us to know which airlines do and don't pay the airport for this service. I would be surprised if AA were not paying, as this was the airline I was flying with in that instance. If they are paying and i need a sticker then it is pedantry. The reader does not register stickers.
