To be honest, I had a decidedly overly rosy memory of what was being put on our tray tables in the run-up to 2020.
Some "highlights:"
For 2-3 years, every time I was upgraded out of Boston I was served the crab cakes with succotash. Don't get me wrong, the crab cakes were pretty decent. But the same meal for that long? Yikes.
For breakfast to all sorts of locations up and down the east coast for three or more years: The flatbread egg sandwich, or choice of cheerios or chex. The meat on the sandwich changed (ham, turkey, turkey bacon), but the sandwich was always the same. And a cup of Chobani.
For lunch between MSP and ATL, a literal ham sandwich. Or between MSP and SEA, a roast beef sandwich. Served with a bag of chips and a prepackaged dessert cookie, only some of which were good. Anyone remember Luvo?
Or for longer flights, like MSP to LAX or SAN, a cheese and tomato omelet, with breakfast sausage on the side. Or the Delta cheeseburger. These were actually good according to my notes, but looking at the pictures and my descriptions, I think what we're getting now is a lot better.
Don't get me wrong, there's still room for improvements, especially on some entrees. But after seeing five choices for a domestic dinner last week, all of which seemed appealing, even if not to my taste, I'm suitably impressed. Sometimes things in the past weren't as good as you remember.
Going further back, in the late 90s on an afternoon PMNW DTW-LAX flight in F the food was a couple of slices of roast beef and a slice of cheese alongside two slices of bread for the passengers to assemble.
My opinion is the good old days for F food on any US airline ended by the mid-90s. I haven't been on a domestic flight in years, but some the meals I see here look pretty decent.
