  1. Get on the first leg to ORD
  2. Do SDC after I'm in the air
  3. Arrive at ORD, claim my bags at recheck and leave the airport
  4. The next day, show up at the airport and check my bags again
Does this work? What do I tell the counter agent when I show up with my bags the following day?

Unfortunately, a proper change to the flight I want is something like $2,000 .
It can be difficult to do an SDC with checked bags, but the app might allow it. Note that you're going to need fare class availability in your current fare class and it'll need to be less than 24 hours from teh time you're making the change. If it's $2K to make that change now, I suspect one or both of those conditions don't exist.
