I can’t conceive of an aircraft designed to have a weak point where the wings attach. The consequences of it happening inflight would obviously be catastrophic. Severe turbulence can be hard to comprehend in its intensity. shedding a wing in hard landing would also for the most part lead to more not fewer fatalities. In this case the wing either failed due to the impact fracturing the wing spar or the fuel tank explosion literally blew the wing off. What appears to have saved the passengers was an area of deep snow the aircraft plowed through after it exited the runway which snuffed out the fire. Many passengers were covered in jet fuel. There is a video out showing this as it occurred. Incredibly lucky that it happened.
