They are so-so, but not even close to the worst thing about LHR. Aspects of the LHR connection experience that are really worst in class, in my opinion:
1) the bus ride between T3 and T5: crammed with people, slow, annoying
2) having to re-clear security on the vast majority of connections: crammed with people, slow, annoying
3) the extremely overcrowded public spaces in T5, especially the bus gate areas: crammed elbow to elbow with people, slow, annoying
Why not focus on these aspects of the LHR experience? LHR with somewhat better lounges in five years will _still_ be one of the worst airports at the world at which to make a connection!
Note that the three issues I listed above could be at least be improved without billion pound construction projects:
1) a) Double the number of buses b) implement a tiered bus system with separate buses for those with lounge access of each level
2) just stop with the security theater!
3) Announce and open gates much earlier before the flights, so the crowds are spread out to the different gates instead of being concentrated by the retail stores
With the possible exception of point 3, none of these items are technically related to BA, or within BA's reach to change. Remember, BA is a tenant at LHR.
Part of the issue is that LHR
is crammed with people. 80mio pax/year, of which 2/3 /roughly are in T3 and T5. However, there is a trial to avoid having to clear security again, which is currently underway and could become reality. As for announcing gates earlier, part of the issue is that gates - especially shorthaul - change extremely frequently.
