We are flying to Puerto Vallarta. An option is to fly through MEX. Thinking of a layover of a day and a half (arrive Saturday afternoon and depart Monday morning) just to check out Mexico City. Obviously, we can't do a ton of things. But is it worth the hassle? Easy to get from MEX to the city and back? How crazy would checking in at MEX be on a Monday morning?
Mondays are pretty much dead, because all the major tourists sites are closed including many taco street stands and family operated restaurants. Traffic should be a lot less on Monday mornings. The city is very congested on Sundays for family day. Because tourists sites are free for Mexican nationals.
