sure, if one has no OW status costs do go up if checked luggage is needed and you have strong perferrence to where in the cabin you sit.
Honestly I too, have chosen other airlines over AY for quite a few years now but every now and then the price and schedule is just right, and there I am sitting on a AY plane anyway.
