The security depends on where you travel. If you travel transborder, you have to clear security at YOW and YUL. But then, I always had luck with the transborder security at YUL being fast.

The good thing about trains is you don't have to show up an hour before your train, like is the case with planes. So, you can just get to the station with a couple minutes to spare, and there's no dead time during which to go to a lounge anyhow. And even if the train is delayed, again many HSR stations in Europe have lounges, just like airports. And also, since you're connecting at YUL, you can still use the MLL in YUL to shower/eat before a long flight.
I'm just trying to come up with a few scenarios, I'm all in for proper European style air-rail connection. Bringing firearms is probably an edge case where it'd be impossible to do on a train, but how often do you travel with a firearm across Canada and need to transfer in YUL instead of YYZ, it's probably close to 0.
I usually connect to transatlantic flights from YUL, YOW's is arguably easier and almost always less busy than YUL, I can see why people prefer to clear security at YOW over YUL/YYZ (However, with the verified traveller program, it's mostly a non-issue).
