Would be November, wondering if saving my free nights and taking a chance makes sense at Andaz.

Savannah seems like great value for a Hyatt Globalist!

next up is Charleston and maybe a night at Hilton head if any comments on that. Thank you!
I have not stayed at either property, but I did stay at HR for several days which is nearby Andaz and I think the location of Andaz (and HR) is hard to beat. Hyatt Regency not only has the location but also has unobstructed river view rooms which are great for looking at huge ships passing by. Do not use SUA at HR, though, because their standard suites are not that great and do not offer river views. Sorry I am not answering your question about Andaz vs Thompson much, but again Andaz is right in the middle of things location-wise.
Some of the more vibrant streets are Broughton west of ~Price or so, St Julian near Andaz, and River St. Bull St is a very pleasant stroll. Thompson seems a bit far from all those, although I’ve read reviews about it being a very nice property.
