I had a fun little diversion the other day. I was on UA601 from EWR-PBI on 13 February. We were late getting out of Newark due to the low ceilings / reduced visibility but otherwise pretty smooth. We entered into a holding pattern over the ocean as we approached PBI. The pilot came on and announced the airport was "closed" and that we would be diverted to Fort Lauderdale along with several other flights. The FAs probably caused a bit of unnecessary stress by saying it would be unlikely that they'd let passengers deplane in FLL that desired to do so since that's exactly what happened. I had no checked luggage and opted to get off at FLL. The plane ultimately made the ~40 mile FLL-PBI flight about 90 minutes later - 18 minute flight. Absolutely beautiful weather in Florida and I can't find any details as to if/why the airport was closed.
