Here are statuses on the properties listed above based on what I know and info I've been fed from sources:
  • Ubud - partially built, cancelled
  • Mumbai - partially built, frozen as a shell a few floors high
  • Delhi - cancelled
  • Sharm El Sheikh - cancelled
  • Marrakech - cancelled
  • Sanya - I keep hearing that this one is on and off; probably cancelled
  • Cancun - was the Melody Maker, transitioned to the Armar House, began renovations and stopped partway through, now abandoned
  • Playa Del Carmen - went silent, most likely cancelled
  • Marbella - long delayed, most likely cancelled
  • Phuket - long delayed, most likely cancelled
  • Milan - opened as Casa Brera under the LC banner, but there will/should be a W opening late this year or early next near the Duomo in the place of the former Palazzo Matteotti hotel
  • Cabarete - this one was selling condos but went quiet; the website is still up here
  • Turks and Caicos - cancelled after going dark for years
A second W was announced for Mumbai at Powai Lake, in the same complex as the Renaissance-turned-Westin, but it was cancelled a few years ago citing poor market demand and was instead built as offices.

W has recently shed both its hotels in Chicago and has been undergoing a brand regeneration to make it less clubby and more playfully luxurious; their new flagships of W New York - Union Square and W Hollywood are supposed to be the prototypes of the 'new' W.
