Flight stats does show gate for UA at LHR more than 3 hours before departure, but haven't compared how accurate it is
I'm pretty sure the gates are all known, they just choose not to show it so that people stay close to duty free. I flew through MUC once and in the LH F lounge, the attendant was able to pull up the gate info ~4 hours before the flight.
