Maybe it’s my fight pattern but I often find that upgrade offers are higher than fare difference between purchased and lowest available business.

Recent example one way ticket KUL-DOH-LCA

• Paid for economy: $600
• Lowest available business: $1900
• Upgrade offer KUL-DOH: $1000
• Upgrade offer DOH-LCA: $750
• Upgrade offer KUL-DOH-LCA: $1600 — more than upfare

Per segment offers make sense (whether they represent good value it’s another topic, which is irrelevant for this discussion). But upgrade offer for both segments which is offered «at discount if you upgrade both flights» as advertised by the app / website does not make any sense.

I would expect:
Upgrade offer KUL-DOH-LCA: $1300 = difference between paid and lowest available business (or even lower because upgrades comes without lounge and comes with harsh restriction on changes). There should be no change fee to upfare, first because my ticket comes with 2 free changes anyway.

I did not experience many situations with other airline trying to charge more for upgrade than upfare, but with QR it’s almost every other flight . Sometimes even per segment upgrade offer is higher than upfare of entire ticket.

At the very least it just looks bad and shows that airline IT department needs some improvement. Not all customers are stupid to take upgrade offer before checking cost of upfare, but if someone take a bait, then realize mistake, they would be very unhappy.
