You can book a refundable round trip and cancel one way later, but you will get re-fared at one way rate before being refunded - and very likely you will owe rather than get a refund. Airlines are very smart and know all the tricks people have tried to get cheaper this and that, but they will make sure you pay the fare based on your actual travel. So in essence, no advantage to booking refundable round trip and canceling return compared to refundable one way. Oh, and also, this will be very expensive.
What if you book a refundable return trip and just don't use the return portion? Can you just not show up for return flight? Or does that cause penalties or fees as well? Thinking about the scenario where it is cheaper to buy a return ticket than a one way...

So in this case does it become cheaper to just book a one way now for the Sept flight, OR wait until very close to September and try to get a round trip then with return date of June 2026? Wouldn't that also be quite expensive if you are booking the outgoing portion of the journey so close to the actual trip starting date?
