In particular, the entire purpose of the right to care in regards to accommodation is to allow you to get some sleep. Therefore, if you're dealing with this at 1 AM, it's reasonable to get something close to the terminal. Booking a suite or a high end hotel in the city could indeed be frowned upon by courts, but OP's cases is borderline and in borderline situations, European courts will normally side with the customer.
