It appears the taxi driver gave you a discount, he didn't overcharge you. HKD 300 ($38.50) for a 35 km journey in one of the most expensive cities in the world is hardly a "considerable expense" by any stretch.
And in Hong Kong you don't have to haggle on price and nor is it common practice to ask a taxi driver "how much" as street hails go by the meter. Something doeson't add up here.
Haggling is a fact of life in Hong Kong with taxis, but you need to be able to converse with the taxi driver in order to do it. When taxis are scarce you probably won't be able to get one without haggling.
