my general thoughts, the lower the points, the lower the ‘taxes’. We live ‘up north’ now and departing from Paris is as easy as getting to LHR and far more luxurious on AF. So, as a rule, find the VS flight from Paris (or even Dublin) instead of LHR direct and it can be 50% less fees. This works best in UC but one Y example 2 Dec 25, cdg-Cpt 11.5K + EU141.
