I ended up hailing a taxi at considerable expense to the 360 cable car; did a round trip and am now talking the MRT back to my hotel. I negotiated down to 300 which was lower than what he quoted; I felt it was excessive. But the meter read 291 at the end of the trip.
It appears the taxi driver gave you a discount, he didn't overcharge you. HKD 300 ($38.50) for a 35 km journey in one of the most expensive cities in the world is hardly a "considerable expense" by any stretch.

And in Hong Kong you don't have to haggle on price and nor is it common practice to ask a taxi driver "how much" as street hails go by the meter. Something doeson't add up here.
