In ExpertFlyer you can set an alert to see when C opens for a particular flight - you can have up to 200 alerts checking. I have had a few situations in the past when AA was doing something in their system at 3am - and some C class opened - this is generally with a week or so of the flight.
If you get an alert at 3am - then call immediately. The Agent will see it and I tell them to process it. If they bulk - I tell them if I booked a ticket right now - I could process it automatically. Wait lists don't clear when this happens. There is a short window - so call right when the text is received. Works best for light sleepers.
As always for C - you need to only check on nonstop segments.
