I would honestly consider LGA over JFK in this situation. JFK terminal 7 does not have any lounge access for AC J class and the lineups at for security at LGA tend to be quicker, especially with a J class ticket.

Two things to consider:

Make sure you don't need a transit visa for Canada.

Also, should airlines on some occasions open up award availability on short notice. You may see an itinerary that you like open up the day before. If that's the case and given your situation AE can rebook you and may or may not waive the rebooking fee.
