Thank you for the response. I am hoping to keep complaining to DOT as a last resort, since I am afraid Air India would just cancel my ticket if they heard I complained. The odd thing is: right after I was kicked off, Air India was still selling J seats on my flight. So can that be considered overbooking?

Unfortunately, AC only has one J itinerary available for my date, which has 2 stops instead of 1, so is worse than what I have right now. But I'll keep tracking if anything becomes available. All things considered, my updated itinerary isn't terrible, but I'd much rather have my original direct flight. I understand that that's likely not going to happen though.

You probably should have contacted aeroplan right away to figure out what happened, rather than continue dealing with Air India. Although even so, not clear what they could have done. But at least lay the blame where it belongs.

There are airlines which don't hesitate treating rewards like they cn changed/cancel in any way that's convenient to them.
Good point, next time I'll deal with Aeroplan directly and immediately. I asked Aeroplan what happened, and they said they don't know, and only Air India could tell. But AI are refusing to tell me why I was kicked off of the flight, even though I reminded them that DOT regulation requires them to do so.
