I suppose going to the main mall in a selection of towns and walking around the neighborhoods and seeing the community services is the simplest but perhaps not the most rewarding ?

I’ve seen some private tours offering visits to HDB estates but they seem to be rather expensive !
Good luck with it, my knowledge of the Heartlands is fairly limited, I went up to Ang Mo Kio every week for about a year for my covid PCR tests, other than that, my knowledge is mostly from the upper deck of a bus passing through them to say the Changi ferry terminal to go out to Pulau Ubin, an island in the Johor Strait which is as close to an original Kampong as I think you'll find. I think outside of your wish list, but here's a link anyway:

You may find this of interest, which is close to Geylang where we live:

Tiong Bahru is technically Heartlands i the process of gentrification and being "hip" (sorry hate that word), and is one of the 9oldest housing estates in Singapore.

Good luck.
