Also be aware that if it is available and you do use a systemwide upgrade on BA, that you will also likely have to pay any additional carrier surcharge for the higher cabin ; this could be quite high depending on the routing

e.g. on a US originating journey US-UK, for upgrade one way to PE could be $275; for PE- business $550 and business to 1st $125
