There is no general answer to your question. It depends on a lot of things. Generally, flights within the same region are combinable as a r/t. Europe, SE Asia, AU/NZ etc. I have in the past however also bought BOS-ATH/MEL-BOS and it priced as a r/t, so YMMV.
