My recommendation is to check lavatory door manually since it should unlocked if unoccupied regardless of the light.

The locking mechanism on the lavatory door is what triggers the “occupied” light.

When people exit the lavatory they move the mechanism enough to unlock the door but not all the way to the stop which is actually what turns the light off.

When you mention this to the crew, all they do is move the locking mechanism a fraction of an inch to the fully open position which then extinguishes the light.
It would be helpful if someone could post a photo of this mechanism so we do not have to disturb the crew.

This metal cover on the outside seems like a separate issue of the lavatory actually being locked?
