Upgrades are very different for
- UA domestic - international flights
- UA flights vs flights on other airlines.
- Can be a long way from "free" !!!
The upgrade policy of USA and non USA airlines is very different. With non USA airlines always expect to fly in the seat you buy. Non USA airlines will fly with unoccupied premium economy, business and first class seats.
