Nope. Two different airlines is better handled by the system UA uses. Counter-intuitive, but it what it is - mainly because Shares isn’t expecting one to have two different UA tickets. Sounds like the GS agent was having trouble w/ the simpler check-through, or you misunderstood her.
I’ve had top-notch service by non-GS agents doing the same thing. A non-GS agent at the regular counter who can check across two tickets is no less competent in that respect than a GS agent who does the exact same thing.
