It needs to not only be booked by 12/31, but also post by 12/31 to use that year's credit. Otherwise, if it posts on 1/1 or thereafter it will use the following year's credit and this is clearly stated in the terms of this benefit. That's the risk of waiting until the very least minute to book... I understand that sometimes it can't be avoided but it's still a risk you're taking.
I followed the T&Cs which states "Eligible bookings must be processed before December 31st, 11:59PM Central Time, each calendar year to be eligible for statement credits within that year. " What their definition of "processed" may differ from our expectations since the card was charged prior to that deadline but not posted until 1/1.
