I posted elsewhere briefly on this which got me thinking about turning down upgrades......
yes, I have turned down a CPU when The Boss (i.e. Mrs mfirst) is back in coach and didnt want the better seat herself
but:
traveling by myself the other night, OGG-DEN (6 hr redeye)
light load and at the time of boarding had an entire row of 4 seats (could have picked a few rows of 3) to myself - as did a bunch of others
...but GA asked me - "hey, we have a no-show up front and you are #1 on the list if you want it"
hard to turn down the PP upgrade - however, keep in mind this is a 772HD lay flat (at least not a 737)
really didnt cost me much - other than 20 PP
... and while the food was much better (this is discussed elsewhere) - with better food and desert cheese plate and hot fudge (like the true Polaris)

did I make the right choice?
anyone else turn down upgrades - and, why?
