I wasn't expecting much, but I had a pleasant stay recently at the Courtyard SoHo (which I know most would consider Hudson Square as opposed to SoHo.) Right on top of the 1 train and a block away from the C/E. Rooms looked to have been recently updated and the front desk/lobby service was above average for a limited service hotel. You might get more bang for the buck although without the boutique vibe.
