BTW Amex agents appear to be trying very hard, and they're polite, but they don't know what to do! Unbelievable. Perhaps a reason to forget the membership rewards 5x and book directly with the carrier... Thinking I'll wait until I arrive in AMS and find a real Dutch person--maybe just ask for a credit for that leg and use my backup flight?
Re your last sentence: once the journey has started then the requirement to do everything through your agent (Amex) doesn't apply anymore. KLM then has authority to make changes. It's not an ideal situation (and they may not want to help because it is an existing situation, not a last minute development) but if you are prepared to wait until you arrive in AMS then in theory someone can help you. And as you are asking for credit then you could even do this after your trip.
