Our main concern is not getting stuck in traffic for hours, since it'll be evening peak time.

I really don't share your traffic concern. I can't count the number of times I have taken a taxi to the city and it really is not a problem.
Bangkok may be different to where you're from. I often find that some cash is handy even though I rarely use it at home. Sure you can pay for a lot of things with your card but there are small vendors, taxis, river boat, tipping etc where some cash is useful.
